Frequently asked

Things you might want to know

How accurate is TroTrace? +

On internal test footage, the detector identifies clear high-amplitude gait asymmetries reliably and flags subtle low-amplitude asymmetries with lower confidence. The system is calibrated to refuse rather than guess on borderline cases — if a clip can't support a confident screening, it returns 'inconclusive' instead of pointing at a wrong limb. On real-world video, performance depends on recording quality: clean lateral footage gives a vet-ready screening report; off-angle or shaky video gets refused at the gate. TroTrace is a screening tool, not a substitute for veterinary examination.

What kind of video do I need? +

Stand to the side of the horse (perpendicular). Hold the phone in landscape, steady, around 5 metres back. Have someone trot the horse past you in a straight line on a level, even surface for 10 seconds. Avoid frontal, rear, oblique, and shaky shots — the gate will refuse them. The recording-guidance overlay in the app shows you exactly where the horse should be in frame.

Does this replace a vet? +

No. TroTrace is a screening and triage tool, not a clinical assessment. We tell you which leg shows the asymmetry and how confident we are. A vet still does flexion tests, nerve blocks, imaging, and the actual treatment decisions. The system's job is to help you spot gait asymmetry earlier, document it objectively, and share something concrete with your vet.

How long does an analysis take? +

Around 30 to 90 seconds per 10-second clip on our cloud GPU. The first analysis of a session is slowest because the AI model has to warm up; subsequent ones are faster. Long videos take proportionally longer; we recommend keeping clips to 10-15 seconds of clean trotting.

What happens to my videos? +

Your video is uploaded to our cloud GPU for analysis and processed in an isolated, ephemeral container. We don't save your videos to disk after the analysis completes — only the resulting JSON verdict is returned to your phone. We don't sell, share, or use your footage for training without explicit consent.

Why does the gate refuse some videos? +

Six pre-flight checks run before any verdict: horse visibility, keypoint confidence, lateral angle, gait clarity (trot detected), motion stability, and usable frame count. If any of these is critically below threshold, we refuse to give a verdict — better to say 'we can't analyse this' than guess wrong. The recording tips on the result screen tell you exactly what to fix.

What's a 'rescue' verdict? +

Bilateral asymmetry can produce a near-symmetric gait pattern — both legs compensate by similar amounts. Our primary detector compares left vs right and might call that 'sound' even when both legs are affected. The rescue branch catches this: when phase amplitude is high but left/right asymmetry is low AND an independent metric (Keegan MinDifference) flags an abnormality, we surface a 'possible bilateral pattern' result at moderate confidence and recommend vet review.

Does it work on camels, donkeys, mules? +

Today: horses only. The pose model (DeepLabCut SuperAnimal-Quadruped) does include camels, donkeys, and mules in its training set, so it can detect them — but our gait analysis is calibrated for horse stride frequency and biomechanics. A dedicated camel mode is on our roadmap (Phase 3). Donkeys and mules are similar enough that we expect partial usefulness today, but we don't yet vouch for vet-ready output on those species.

When will paid plans launch? +

The owner tier stays free permanently — that's a commitment. The Pro tier (vets, farriers, physios) launches when the patient-roster, before/after, multi-clip, and PDF features are stable. Estimate: a few months. Sign up on the contact page and you'll be notified — and the first 6 months free if you're an early waitlist member.

Is there an iOS / Android app? +

TroTrace is a Progressive Web App — works in any modern phone browser. Open trotrace.com on iPhone (Safari) or Android (Chrome) and add it to your home screen. It looks and feels like a native app, but with no app store, no installs, and updates land instantly. Native iOS and Android wrappers are on the roadmap if customer demand justifies them.
